A Makku Replica Keychain For Founder Carol
When you’re building something bootstrapped, the hardest part isn’t always the work, it’s the lack of access: fewer resources, fewer connections, fewer chances to learn from people who’ve already experienced a similar journey. I first met Carol, the founder of Makku, in junior high through church. Years later, when we reconnected, she did something rare: she made time. She listened to my story, offered thoughtful feedback, and gave me the kind of constructive critique I’d been searching for.
When NUNCHI hosted its first brand event at Wolf & Badger, Carol donated Makku with no expectations, just support. Makgeolli has deep roots in Korean culture: a traditional rice wine brewed with nuruk, shared for centuries at gatherings and celebrations, carrying history, nostalgia, and everyday warmth. Having it at our first event felt like bringing home into the room—a way to share culture through taste, not explanation.
As a thank you, I translated Makku’s bottle into metal—an everyday icon made permanent. The result was a 3D keychain, about 1.5” tall, cast in 925 sterling silver: a blend of tradition and contemporary life, meant to move with you in life, not stored away. Five years later, I’m grateful to be able to call Carol a friend—and to have a piece that reminds me how far a little belief can go.
