A word from our co-founder, Jane
As a first generation Korean American, I grew up feeling caught between two worlds, one that explored my ethnic roots and another that rejected this identity to embrace a quiet, innocuous sense of normality. I resented the ceaseless attention and aggressive questions. The unabashed comments and intrusive inquiries transformed my ethnicity into a commodity that was often demanded of me: “What are you? Where are you really from? Your English is so good. You’re one of the good orientals. China doll.” But when I reacted at all, I was met with dismissal and other times, hostility. Even friends chalked up my frustration and anger to being followed home and berated with racial insults as an overreaction. “It’s just words,” they would say.
And it's also just those kinds of words that can incite hate, violence, and murder. The Atlanta Spa shooting is the direct cause of anti-Asian rhetoric. It is now more than ever our responsibility and absolute need to condemn hate and create lasting change.
To our Asian community and our allies, we at Nunchi see you, hear you, and stand with you.
We remain committed to rectifying the racial inequalities and systemic racism that has plagued minds and institutions. It is okay to feel despair and be angry. We encourage you to channel these justified feelings to fighting white supremacy and hate: share, listen, report hate crimes, donate, and volunteer. Help us fight anti-Asian hate and be the change we seek. In lieu of a product launch or donating proceeds to AAPI organizations with a purchase, we would rather 100% of your money to go to the causes you stand for.
